Thu Mar 27 04:22:09 UTC 2025: ## Kim Jong Un Oversees Testing of AI-Equipped Drones, Fuels Concerns Amidst Allegations of Military Aid to Russia

**Pyongyang, North Korea** – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the testing of new AI-powered suicide and reconnaissance drones, state media reported Thursday. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) showcased images of the tests, which involved the successful striking of ground targets by attack drones. Kim emphasized the importance of prioritizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and artificial intelligence in the country’s military modernization efforts, calling for expanded production capacity.

The new drones, developed by North Korea’s Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex, are said to possess advanced capabilities, including tracking and monitoring strategic targets and enemy movements. KCNA highlighted the integration of “new artificial intelligence” into both reconnaissance and attack drone systems.

The tests also revealed North Korea’s newly developed airborne early warning and control (AEW) aircraft, equipped with a radar dome similar to South Korea’s Boeing Peace Eye. This aircraft, reportedly converted from a Russian-made Il-76 cargo plane, marks a significant advancement in North Korea’s surveillance capabilities. Kim was briefed on other new military technologies including intelligence-gathering, electronic jamming, and attack systems.

These developments come amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) accused North Korea of providing Russia with an additional 3,000 troops, along with missiles and ammunition, to support its war in Ukraine. The JCS estimates that a total of 11,000 North Korean soldiers were initially deployed, with significant casualties. The ongoing supply of weapons, including short-range ballistic missiles and artillery, raises concerns about escalating regional instability. The JCS warned that the amount of military aid from North Korea could increase. Analysts have previously raised concerns about potential technology transfers between Russia and North Korea. The advancements in North Korean drone technology, coupled with its alleged support for Russia, underscore a growing military threat in the region.
