MALAPPURAM, KERALA—March 27, 2025—Nine individuals in Valanchery, Malappuram district, Kerala, have tested positive for HIV after sharing syringes for drug use, prompting health officials to warn of a potential surge in cases. The revelation came to light following an investigation launched by the Health Department after a single HIV positive case was discovered in January 2025.
The investigation, conducted in conjunction with the Kerala AIDS Control Society, revealed that eight additional individuals who shared syringes with the initial patient had also contracted the virus. Three of the nine infected individuals are migrant workers from other states.
District Medical Officer (DMO) R. Renuka expressed serious concern, highlighting the vulnerability of drug users to contracting and spreading HIV. The DMO’s fears are amplified by the fact that all nine individuals are drug users, and several are married, raising concerns about potential transmission to their spouses.
Following the initial positive case, the Health Department implemented a targeted surveillance program focusing on drug users and sex workers in the Valanchery region. This initiative unfortunately confirmed the initial fears of health officials. The department is now working to prevent further spread of the virus.
