**New Delhi, March 27, 2025** – BJP Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba today urged the Indian government to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur to identify and deport illegal immigrants. He raised this demand during the Rajya Sabha’s zero hour, citing concerns about a demographic imbalance caused by illegal immigration, particularly along the porous Indo-Myanmar border.
Leishemba highlighted a significant disparity in village growth between certain districts in Manipur. He noted a 122% increase in villages in districts like Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Churachandpur, and Pherzawl between 1969 and 2024, contrasting sharply with a mere 9% increase in Naga-dominated areas. He attributed this disproportionate growth to illegal immigration, alleging that infiltrators are manipulating the electoral process.
The MP argued that implementing the NRC, using 1951 as the base year, is crucial before any redrawing of electoral constituencies in the state. He warned that without addressing illegal immigration, Manipur’s indigenous population would face severe consequences due to a demographic imbalance. Leishemba stressed that deportation of illegal immigrants is the only logical solution to protect the state’s demographic integrity.
