Wed Mar 26 14:16:26 UTC 2025: ## UN Plea to Halt Bangladesh Advisor’s Downplaying of Minority Attacks

**GUWAHATI, March 26, 2025** – An Indian rights group, the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG), has urged the United Nations to intervene and prevent Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Mohammed Yunus, from minimizing violence against religious minorities in the country. RRAG alleges that Mr. Yunus’s repeated dismissal of attacks on Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians as isolated incidents, criminal acts, or accidents emboldens religious fundamentalists.

The plea, addressed to the UN Secretary-General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), and diplomatic missions in Dhaka, cites a recent report by the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council detailing 92 violent incidents between January and February, including 11 murders and numerous attacks on religious sites. Mr. Yunus, in a rejoinder, attributed these incidents to personal disputes and criminal activity, contradicting the Unity Council’s findings.

RRAG highlights that Mr. Yunus’s claims – echoed by the Bangladesh Police – are at odds with a February UNHCHR report, which, conducted at Mr. Yunus’s invitation, documented attacks on Ahmadiyya Muslims, Hindus, and indigenous groups. RRAG Director Suhas Chakma stated that Mr. Yunus’s actions are “unbecoming of a head of government” and that his downplaying of violence effectively incites further attacks against religious minorities. The group further accuses Mr. Yunus of previously attributing such attacks to political motives, a claim later seemingly substantiated by a police investigation deemed “manufactured” by RRAG. The organization emphasizes the vulnerability of minority leaders in the face of Mr. Yunus’s continued denial.
