Thu Mar 27 05:42:07 UTC 2025: ## Unprecedented Coral Bleaching Event Devastates Australia’s Ningaloo Reef

**Sydney, Australia – March 27, 2025** – Australia’s renowned Ningaloo Reef is suffering from an “unprecedented” mass coral bleaching event, scientists announced Wednesday. A prolonged marine heatwave, with ocean temperatures reaching three degrees above average, has caused widespread bleaching across the 300km-long reef system.

Ocean scientist Kate Quigley, part of a team documenting the damage, described the situation as the reef’s worst mass bleaching in years. The bleaching, which occurs when warm water forces corals to expel their colorful algae, has affected corals at all depths, not just the surface. Multiple coral species are impacted.

While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, early indications suggest this event surpasses the severity of the 2011 bleaching event. The Australian government weather bureau confirmed that temperatures exceeded the bleaching threshold in mid-January. The NOAA also provided monitoring data supporting this finding.

Although bleaching is a serious condition, Quigley emphasized it doesn’t automatically mean coral death. The Minderoo Foundation research scientist is hopeful that some recovery is possible. The incident serves as another stark warning of the impact of rising ocean temperatures on delicate coral ecosystems.
