Thu Mar 27 10:37:03 UTC 2025: ## Madhya Pradesh High Court Approves Plan to Incinerate Remaining Union Carbide Waste
**Bhopal, March 27, 2025** – The Madhya Pradesh High Court has approved the state government’s plan to incinerate the remaining Union Carbide toxic waste within 72 days. The decision follows successful trial runs at a private facility in Pithampur, Dhar district.
The court’s approval, granted by a division bench, came after the state submitted an affidavit detailing the results of three trial incinerations conducted in February and March. These trials, conducted at varying burn rates, successfully processed a total of 30 tonnes of waste, demonstrating the feasibility of incinerating the remaining 328 tonnes.
The state government assured the court that the incineration process will proceed at a rate of 270 kg per hour under the supervision of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB). The entire process is expected to be completed within 72 days. The waste, originating from the defunct Union Carbide factory in Bhopal, was transported to the Pithampur facility earlier.
The successful trial runs, conducted on February 28th, March 4th, and March 10th, monitored the environmental impact of the incineration process on the local Pithampur area. The court’s decision marks a significant step towards the complete disposal of the legacy of the Bhopal gas tragedy.
