**Mumbai, India –** Comedian Kunal Kamra has doubled down on his satirical attacks on Indian politicians, releasing a new song targeting Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman just hours after receiving a second police summons. The Mumbai Police issued the summons in connection with a previous song criticizing Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which led to a police complaint filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel.
Kamra’s latest satirical piece, a reworking of the classic Bollywood song “Hawa Hawai,” lampoons the government’s handling of infrastructure issues like potholes and bridge collapses, as well as the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He also directly targets Sitharaman, referring to her informally.
The comedian has shown defiance in the face of the police investigation. He initially requested a postponement of his appearance but the police rejected his request. On Tuesday, he posted a video featuring footage of Shiv Sena workers vandalizing the Habitat Comedy Club where his original performance was recorded, setting the lyrics of “Hum Honge Kamyaab” (We Will Succeed) to “Hum Honge Kangaal” (We Will Be Bankrupt). This video also included a clip of Shiv Sena Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal, who was arrested for the vandalism, boasting about further actions.
The controversy stems from a song in Kamra’s comedy special that criticized Shinde without naming him, referring to him as a “traitor” (“gaddar”) for his role in the 2022 Maharashtra political upheaval. Shinde, speaking in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, dismissed Kamra’s criticisms, asserting that the people’s mandate had definitively settled the question of who was the true traitor. He issued a veiled threat to the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction of the Shiv Sena. Kamra’s continued defiance and his latest release suggest this comedic-political showdown is far from over.
