Thu Mar 27 03:58:30 UTC 2025: ## Kozhikode Unveils Ambitious City Beautification Plan
**Kozhikode, Kerala, March 27, 2025** – The Kozhikode Corporation has announced a comprehensive plan to rejuvenate the city under the state government’s Urban Rejuvenation and Beautification Programme. The initiative, implemented by Impact Kerala through a Special Purpose Vehicle, includes several key projects aimed at enhancing public spaces and promoting a thriving urban environment.
A major highlight is the creation of a “Readers’ Street” at Mananchira, reflecting Kozhikode’s UNESCO City of Literature status. This ₹2.52 crore project will transform a 180-meter stretch into a pedestrian-friendly zone showcasing the city’s reading culture. Further enhancements to Mananchira include the development of a walking zone incorporating Comtrust, with traffic diverted to Vaikom Mohammed Basheer Road, and the creation of a common plaza encompassing the Town Hall, Art Gallery, and Crown Theatre. A recreation zone is also planned along the Conolly Canal.
Significant investment is also directed towards the city’s water bodies. The Thamarakkulam pond near Varakkal temple will undergo a ₹6.34 crore renovation, preserving its existing Miyawaki forest and adding features such as an open gymnasium, granite ghats, and a walking bridge. The Bilathikulam Temple pond will also be revitalized at a cost of ₹70 lakhs, with historical mural paintings adorning its walls.
The beautification efforts also include the construction of City Gates at Feroke and Korapuzha bridges, allocated ₹50 lakhs. These projects, in addition to enhancing public spaces for all ages, are intended to deter anti-social behavior. The overall plan aims to transform Kozhikode into a more vibrant and attractive city.
