Wed Mar 26 16:00:31 UTC 2025: ## Energy Minister Denies ₹15,000-Crore Smart Meter Scam Allegations
**Bengaluru, March 26, 2025** – Karnataka Energy Minister K.J. George vehemently denied allegations of a ₹15,000-crore scam related to the state’s smart meter rollout, accusations leveled by BJP leader C.N. Ashwath Narayan. Addressing a press conference, Minister George attributed the accusations to misunderstandings and insisted the tender process adhered to the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements Act (KTTP Act).
The Minister clarified that while the KERC mandated smart meters only for temporary connections, new permanent connections could opt for either prepaid or postpaid smart meters. He stated that the government’s approach of phased rollout, focusing on select consumers, negates any suggestion of vested interests. He also explained the tender process, clarifying that it complies with the KTTP Act despite being under KW 4 category, which usually restricts joint ventures. The tender, he said, was issued only for system integrators who would subsequently partner with AMISP and meter manufacturers.
Opposition leader V. Sunil Kumar dismissed the Minister’s clarifications, maintaining that the allegations of a scam remain. The controversy centers around the implementation of smart meters and the procurement process involved. The debate continues, with the Minister defending the government’s actions and the opposition alleging widespread corruption.
