Kannur, Kerala – March 27, 2025 – The Kannur Corporation, led by the United Democratic Front, unveiled its 2025-26 budget today, featuring a ₹24,000 annual incentive for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) amidst ongoing protests by ASHAs demanding a pay raise. The budget prioritizes several key infrastructure projects, including ₹40 crore for converting the old Kannur bus stand into a convention center, ₹4 crore for waste management, and significant allocations for the differently abled, renal patients, and general healthcare. Other planned projects include a night market, a sports complex, and investments in coastal tourism and a potential ropeway. A new award, the Nagarashri Award, will recognize local talent.
The budget session was disrupted by protests from opposition councillors who accused the ruling party of neglecting their demands. Further protests took place outside the council hall, led by BJP district president K.K. Vinod Kumar, highlighting various civic concerns.
