New Delhi, March 27, 2025 – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Wednesday that India and China are actively working to mend their relationship, significantly damaged by the 2020 Galwan Valley border clash. He emphasized that a tense relationship benefits neither nation.
Speaking at an Asia Society event, Mr. Jaishankar acknowledged the “traumatic” nature of the 2020 incident, highlighting the violation of previously agreed-upon terms. While acknowledging that some issues remain unresolved, he noted improvements in relations since October 2024, citing several meetings between Indian and Chinese officials. These efforts include working towards disengagement in previously tense border areas like Depsang and Demchok, following an October agreement. Further progress was made with talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan.
Mr. Jaishankar stressed that while future disagreements are possible, they shouldn’t escalate into disputes. He emphasized the need for managing competition without resorting to conflict, stating that a peaceful border is crucial for broader bilateral relations. The minister concluded by asserting that both countries stand to gain from a more constructive relationship.
