**Hyderabad, March 27, 2025** – The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) criticized the working conditions of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in Telangana, claiming they are overworked and underpaid. A delegation from the Telangana State ASHA Workers’ Union delivered a petition to the National Health Mission (NHM) chief programming officer, Padmaja, on Thursday.
The union alleges that ASHA workers, despite being on a result-based remuneration model, regularly work over eight hours a day without adequate compensation. They also highlighted the lack of social security benefits, including Provident Fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI), which are mandated by law.
AITUC State Deputy General Secretary M. Narasimha demanded the implementation of minimum wage laws and better labor practices for ASHA workers. He stated that the current honorarium-based and fixed wages are unfair.
The union’s memorandum calls for a minimum monthly wage of Rs 26,000, along with PF and ESI benefits, Rs 10 lakh health and accident insurance, a Rs 5 lakh retirement benefit, and preferential treatment in competitive examinations for ASHA workers and their families. They also requested job opportunities for the families of deceased ASHA workers.
