**New Delhi, March 27, 2025** – The Lok Sabha today passed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, a sweeping new law aimed at strengthening India’s national security and streamlining immigration procedures. Home Minister Amit Shah championed the bill, stating it would modernize India’s immigration system, boost the economy, and improve the healthcare and education sectors while enhancing security.
The bill replaces four existing immigration laws, consolidating regulations and introducing stricter penalties for violations. Those found using forged documents face imprisonment of up to seven years and fines of up to ₹10 lakh. Hotels, universities, and hospitals will be mandated to report information on foreign nationals to aid in tracking overstays. The government also gains the power to regulate establishments frequented by foreigners.
While Shah emphasized a welcoming stance towards tourists, students, and businesspeople, he stressed that those posing a security threat will face swift and decisive action. The bill is intended to improve the tracking of foreigners in India and combat illegal immigration.
Opposition amendments to the bill were rejected, and it passed by voice vote. The government asserts the legislation balances national security with economic growth and tourism promotion, and it is not connected to citizenship matters. The bill is expected to significantly impact India’s immigration policies.
