CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Guardians have locked up young pitching star Tanner Bibee with a five-year contract extension, according to multiple reports. The deal, which includes a club option for a sixth year, guarantees Bibee at least $48 million.
The 26-year-old right-hander, who finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, will receive a $2 million signing bonus and salaries of $3 million (2025), $4 million (2026), $7 million (2027), $10 million (2028), and $21 million (2029). The Guardians hold a $21 million club option for 2030 with a $1 million buyout.
Bibee’s contract is the third-largest ever given to a pitcher with less than two and a half years of major league service time. This extension covers his remaining pre-arbitration year, his three arbitration-eligible seasons, and his first year of free agency. The club option provides further control should Bibee continue his strong performance.
“This is a significant commitment to a young player who has already established himself as a key part of our rotation,” said a team spokesperson (exact quote unavailable).
After a standout rookie season (2.98 ERA in 142 innings), Bibee followed up with a solid 2024 campaign (3.47 ERA in 173 2/3 innings), contributing significantly to the Guardians’ ALCS run.
This signing continues the Guardians’ long-standing strategy of extending promising young players early, rather than letting them reach free agency. Bibee joins Jose Ramirez as the only Guardians players with guaranteed contracts extending beyond 2026. The move solidifies Bibee as a cornerstone of the team’s pitching staff for years to come, alongside other key players like Shane Bieber and Logan Allen.
