WASHINGTON, D.C. – Illusionist and endurance artist David Blaine unveils a new side in National Geographic’s six-part docuseries, “David Blaine: Do Not Attempt.” Filmed over three years across nine countries, the series departs from Blaine’s typical magic specials, showcasing his journey to learn from and collaborate with daredevils, athletes, and street performers worldwide.
Rather than showcasing solely polished performances, “Do Not Attempt” gives viewers unprecedented access to Blaine’s training and preparation, including his failed attempts. This vulnerability, Blaine admits, was uncomfortable but ultimately rewarding. The series captures Blaine’s experiences, from Indonesian Debus practitioners manipulating razor blades to his own attempts at nail-eating (resulting in days of throat pain), fire-jumping in Brazil, and a harrowing bee beard stunt.
Safety expert Sebastian Bas Pot, whose role is described as “Glorified Nanny,” ensured the crew’s safety during these often-dangerous feats. Pot emphasizes repetition, observation, and calm as crucial elements in risk mitigation. While a minor skydiving accident occurred during filming, resulting in a spinal fracture that fully healed, Pot’s meticulous planning largely prevented serious injury.
The Arctic Circle episode is a particular highlight, featuring Blaine’s training with free divers under ice and his successful attempt at a sub-glacial swim, inspired by his near-fatal “Drowned Alive” stunt. Blaine’s collaboration with a seasoned Norwegian skydiver and a close encounter with a King Cobra (deemed the series’ most dangerous stunt) are also documented. Extensive preparation, including weeks of training with snake handlers, ensured the safety of both Blaine and the reptile.
Blaine expresses a profound appreciation for the performers he encounters, highlighting their dedication and resilience. He emphasizes the thousands of hours of practice, failure, and repetition that underpin their seemingly magical feats. “Do Not Attempt” is not just about the stunts, but the human stories and the shared spirit of perseverance behind them. The series premiered on National Geographic and is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
