KOLKATA, INDIA – A bomb attack and shooting occurred late Wednesday night outside the home of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MP Arjun Singh in Bhatpara, West Bengal. One young man suffered injuries in the incident.

Police reported that unidentified assailants hurled bombs and fired shots. Mr. Singh and his associates pursued the attackers, causing them to flee. Barrackpore Police Commissioner Ajay Thakur stated that the situation is under control and legal action will be taken against those responsible.

Mr. Singh accused Namit Singh, son of Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Sunita Singh, of orchestrating the attack, alleging indiscriminate firing and bombing. However, TMC MLA Somnath Shyam countered these claims, accusing Mr. Singh and his supporters of initiating violence at the Meghna Jute Mill, resulting in injuries to several individuals. Shyam demanded Mr. Singh’s immediate arrest.

Police sources suggest the violence stemmed from a dispute between worker groups at the jute mill. Namit Singh reportedly arrived on the scene after the initial unrest, escalating the situation.

Following the attack, police recovered several empty cartridges and live bombs. The injured youth was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to a Kolkata hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Authorities have increased patrolling in Bhatpara to prevent further escalation. The investigation is ongoing.
