**Tiruchi, March 27, 2025** – Bharathidasan University, one of Tamil Nadu’s largest universities, is facing administrative delays due to the ongoing vacancy in the Vice-Chancellor position. The previous Vice-Chancellor, M. Selvam, left office on February 5th, leaving a three-member committee to manage the university’s affairs in the interim.
This committee, headed by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education E. Sundaravalli, is responsible for handling the university’s daily operations, including crucial decisions regarding affiliations, research, and budgetary matters. However, the arrangement has led to significant delays, with sources indicating a backlog of important files. The committee’s convener, Ms. Sundaravalli, also shoulders the responsibilities of a similar committee at Madurai Kamaraj University, further complicating the situation.
The university, which oversees 153 affiliated colleges and 38 departments, spanning Tiruchi, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, relies heavily on the Vice-Chancellor’s approval for various crucial matters, including proposals to agencies like the University Grants Commission. The delay in appointing a new Vice-Chancellor is causing concern among faculty and stakeholders, who report significant disruptions to the university’s administrative and academic functions.
The delay in forming the Vice-Chancellor search committee, typically initiated months before the incumbent’s departure, is also attributed to the ongoing discord between the Governor and the state government regarding the inclusion of a UGC nominee in the selection process. This, along with the additional burden on the interim committee, is hindering the timely appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor and the smooth functioning of the university. Faculty members express concern that this delay negatively impacts the university’s growth and progress.
