**TIRUPATTUR, March 27, 2025** – Lawyers in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu, have launched an indefinite boycott of local courts following a near-miss incident at the dilapidated Judicial Magistrate court building. A section of the building’s plaster fell on Tuesday evening, prompting concerns about the safety of litigants, court staff, and advocates.
The boycott affects the Judicial Magistrate court, subordinate court, and District Munisf court. A.C. Devakumar, president of the Vaniyambadi Bar Association, stated that the dilapidated state of the buildings, coupled with their scattered locations, necessitates the construction of a new, modern court complex. He highlighted the inconvenience caused by the courts’ current dispersed locations.
However, the boycott has drawn criticism from litigants like B. Pari, who argue that it will disproportionately burden those seeking justice. Pari emphasized the need for alternative solutions to address the infrastructure issues rather than disrupting court proceedings.
The existing Judicial Magistrate Court, established in the 1920s, is located in the Government Estate. The District Munisf court (established in 1995) and the subordinate court (2009) operate from rented spaces in the Government Commercial Tax building and elsewhere in town respectively.
These courts collectively handle over 100 cases daily and currently have 1,500-2,000 pending cases each. Over 150 litigants from 45 villages in the Vaniyambadi taluk utilize these courts daily, served by approximately 75 practicing advocates. The cramped and poorly maintained courtrooms, characterized by poor lighting and crumbling ceilings, are a major concern. The lawyers’ boycott underscores the urgent need for improved court infrastructure in the region.
