Thu Mar 27 06:55:24 UTC 2025: ## Delhi High Court Seeks Police Response in Sharjeel Imam Jamia Violence Case

**New Delhi, March 27, 2025** – The Delhi High Court today sought a response from Delhi Police regarding a plea filed by activist Sharjeel Imam challenging the framing of charges against him in connection with the 2019 Jamia violence. Imam is accused of instigating violence during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Justice Sanjeev Narula refused to stay the lower court proceedings at this stage. The High Court issued notices to the police and scheduled a further hearing for April 24.

Imam’s challenge stems from a March 7th trial court order that labeled him a “kingpin” in a conspiracy to incite violence, citing his December 13, 2019 speech near Jamia Millia Islamia University as “venomous” and inciting religious hatred.

The trial court also ordered charges against several others, including Anal Hussain, Anwar, Yunus, and Jumman, based on police witness testimony and mobile phone records placing them at the scene of the riots. The case, investigated by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, involves charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP), and the Arms Act. The events originated from the widespread protests that followed the passage of the CAA in December 2019.
