NEW DELHI (March 26, 2025) – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today announced a sweeping plan to improve public safety and address infrastructure challenges, including the relocation of the overcrowded Tihar Jail. The plan includes significant investments in technology, infrastructure, and women’s safety initiatives.
The most significant announcement is the proposed relocation of Tihar Jail, currently housing nearly 19,500 inmates – double its capacity – to a larger site on the city’s outskirts. ₹10 crore has been allocated for initial surveys and consultations for this project. Simultaneously, the government plans a ₹20 crore renovation of the Lampur Restriction and Detention Centre.
To bolster public safety, the government will install 50,000 new CCTV cameras, adding to the existing network of 2.8 lakh. A focus on women’s safety will see the introduction of Pink Police Control Room (PCR) units and the formation of dedicated women’s police battalions. Two new women’s hostels will be built under the ‘Sakhi Niwas Yojana’.
Addressing concerns about welfare scheme misuse, CM Gupta stated that a verification campaign will ensure benefits reach only eligible Delhi residents, specifically targeting illegal immigrants.
The Fire Department will receive a boost with the introduction of two-wheeler first-response vehicles and smaller fire engines deployed in congested areas. ₹110 crore has been allocated for modern technology and equipment upgrades. Finally, an emergency operations center will be established for improved crisis management.
