**Istanbul, Turkey –** The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a prominent opposition figure, has sparked widespread protests across Turkey and a crackdown on dissent. Imamoglu, arrested on March 19th on corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated, was visited in prison on Tuesday by the leader of his party, Ozgur Ozel.
Ozel, head of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), described Imamoglu and other jailed CHP members as strong and defiant. He announced that Tuesday evening would be the CHP’s final planned rally outside Istanbul’s City Hall, and that the party would appoint a replacement for Imamoglu as mayor.
The protests, while largely peaceful in many areas, have seen clashes with police, resulting in numerous arrests. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported over 1,100 arrests since Wednesday, including 43 individuals accused of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his family. Authorities have also detained at least eight journalists covering the protests, sparking condemnation from media organizations as an attack on press freedom. One CHP official defied an order to remove posters of Imamoglu, vowing to continue displaying them.
Imamoglu’s arrest is viewed as a significant blow to the opposition, given his popularity and potential to challenge President Erdogan in future elections, possibly as early as an anticipated snap election. The government maintains that the judiciary is independent, despite international concerns about the politically charged nature of the arrest. The situation remains tense as the protests continue and the crackdown on dissent intensifies.
