**PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) –** Western Oregon and Washington are bracing for severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, with a significant risk of large hail, according to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center. The threat level has increased in the past 24 hours.

Forecasters predict a higher likelihood of supercell thunderstorms west of the Cascade Mountains, potentially producing hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter, damaging winds, and even a brief tornado. Storms are expected to begin around 2 p.m., potentially impacting the Portland metro area during the afternoon commute. The severe weather threat is expected to diminish by 7:30 p.m. as the atmosphere cools.
