Tue Mar 25 18:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Sweden Edges Out Young Northern Ireland in Friendly

**Stockholm, Sweden** – Emil Holm scored early to give Sweden a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland in a friendly international at the Strawberry Arena. The goal, set up by Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak in the seventh minute, proved to be the difference in a match that saw a young Northern Ireland side put up a spirited performance against a Swedish team looking to rebound from a recent loss.

Isak, despite not finding the back of the net himself, was instrumental in Sweden’s attack, drawing defenders and creating the space for Holm’s decisive strike. Northern Ireland, boasting a starting XI with an average age of just 22.6 – the second youngest since 1946 – started brightly, but were unable to capitalize on their early chances. Ruairi McConville nearly scored, heading a Shea Charles free-kick just wide.

Despite the loss, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill praised his team’s effort. The match served as valuable experience for the many young players in the squad, many of whom are facing a challenging World Cup qualifying campaign that includes a clash against Germany. O’Neill stressed the importance of embracing the challenge of playing against such a strong opponent.

For Sweden, the win was a much-needed confidence booster following a 1-0 defeat to Luxembourg in a previous friendly. Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson had been critical of his team’s performance in that match and will likely be pleased with the improved display against Northern Ireland. The match also marked the first meeting between the two nations since 2007.
