Tue Mar 25 05:11:35 UTC 2025: ## South Korea Launches Probe into Trade Pact Violations Ahead of Potential US Tariffs

**Seoul, South Korea –** South Korea’s Korea Customs Service (KCS) announced on Tuesday a special investigation into potential violations of its free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States, specifically targeting inaccurate country-of-origin markings on exported goods. This preemptive action comes ahead of anticipated increased scrutiny and potential retaliatory tariffs from the US under the Trump administration.

The investigation will focus on products exported to the US, with a particular emphasis on those already subject to US anti-dumping tariffs or under close customs observation. The KCS aims to prevent companies from falsely labeling foreign goods as South Korean products, safeguarding the reputation of domestic businesses and ensuring the authenticity of Korean exports.

South Korea is one of only three Asia-Pacific nations with an FTA with the US, which largely eliminates tariffs on goods traded between the two countries. The KCS spokesperson cited concerns about stricter US verification procedures following the imposition of higher tariffs, mirroring experiences during the first Trump presidency. The KCS emphasized its commitment to taking firm action against any companies found to be in violation. The Trump administration has previously indicated plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on major trading partners by April 2nd.
