**Ettayapuram, Tamil Nadu, March 26, 2025** – The ancestral home of renowned Tamil poet and freedom fighter Subramaniya Bharathi, now a memorial in Ettayapuram, suffered a partial roof collapse on Tuesday evening. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the incident occurred after closing hours. However, the collapse of the first-floor roof damaged the ground floor roof and some furniture.
Revenue officials, including the Ettayapuram Tahsildar, visited the site to assess the damage and investigate the cause. Power to the building has been cut by TANGEDCO.
Local residents attributed the collapse to poor maintenance, specifically citing the lack of regular cleaning of rainwater pipes leading to water stagnation on the roof. They believe this preventable issue contributed to the structural failure.
The Tamil Nadu government, which acquired the property in 1973 and converted it into a memorial, has allocated funds in the 2025-2026 budget for renovations to 17 memorials across the state, including the Bharathi Memorial. The memorial currently houses a part-time library and is open to the public daily. The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing.
