SAN ANTONIO, TX – The men’s NCAA Tournament has reached the Sweet 16, and the results are a testament to the dominance of college basketball’s elite. Only one double-digit seed, Arkansas, remains after a tournament largely devoid of major upsets. All four number one seeds, and three of the four number two seeds, are vying for a place in the Final Four in San Antonio.
While there were a few notable exceptions, such as McNeese State’s historic upset of Clemson and Arkansas’s stunning victory over St. John’s, the tournament has largely played out as expected. Duke, in particular, impressed, cruising through their first two games with a combined 67-point margin of victory, boosted by the return of freshman Cooper Flagg from injury.
The SEC boasts an unprecedented seven teams in the Sweet 16, breaking their own record. This success, however, is tempered by the early exits of some highly-ranked conference members. Meanwhile, the Big East experienced a complete collapse, failing to send any teams to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019. UConn’s surprising loss to Florida ended their 13-game tournament winning streak, a run second only to UCLA’s historic 38-game streak.
Coach John Calipari’s Arkansas team, despite a rocky start to the season, emerged as a Cinderella story, though a relatively low-seeded one, showcasing Calipari’s coaching prowess in rebuilding a roster and navigating numerous injuries. Other notable moments included Maryland’s last-second Sweet 16 clincher and Florida’s victory over the defending champions.
The absence of a clear underdog, and the overall dominance of top seeds, marks a departure from recent tournaments. This year’s Sweet 16 lacks the usual compelling underdog narrative, but the lineup of elite teams promises an exciting Final Four.
