**Mumbai, India** – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to release its men’s central contracts in the coming days, sparking debate over potential changes to the coveted A+ category. The release follows the announcement of the women’s contracts earlier this week and comes amidst the retirement of several T20 stalwarts.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja’s recent retirements from the T20I format have created uncertainty regarding the A+ category, which previously included these players alongside Jasprit Bumrah. While Bumrah remains an all-format player, the others are now limited to two formats, leading to discussions about their continued placement in the highest pay grade (₹7 crore).
Sources within the BCCI indicate disagreement among stakeholders regarding the retention of all senior players in the A+ category. While some advocate for maintaining the status quo, others believe a restructuring is necessary given the changed circumstances.
Several other significant changes are anticipated. Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement will remove him from the list. Axar Patel, recently named vice-captain for the England T20I series, is likely to be promoted from Group B to Group A. Shreyas Iyer, after a period away, is expected to return.
The criteria for inclusion—three Tests, eight ODIs, or ten T20Is in a calendar year—will see some players dropped, notably Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shardul Thakur. However, the selection committee retains the power to make exceptions. Rising stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Akash Deep, Sarfaraz Khan, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are expected to be included in the contract list.
The final list, which comprised 30 players last year, is eagerly awaited by players and fans alike. The A category carries a ₹5 crore retainer, B ₹3 crore, and C ₹1 crore.
