**GAZA CITY, PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES** – Hundreds of Palestinians staged a rare anti-Hamas protest in northern Gaza on Tuesday, demanding an end to the ongoing conflict with Israel. Witnesses reported demonstrators chanting slogans calling for the removal of Hamas and an end to the violence, a week after Israel resumed its intense bombing campaign following a brief truce.
The protest in Beit Lahia, largely attended by men, followed an appeal circulating on Telegram. One participant, who declined to be fully identified fearing reprisals, stated the protest aimed to convey the people’s plea for peace. He also alleged that Hamas security forces, in plainclothes, attempted to disperse the demonstration.
Another protester echoed the sentiment of widespread exhaustion with the conflict, questioning Hamas’s continued hold on power amidst the devastation. This sentiment reflects Israel’s long-standing calls for Gazans to rise up against Hamas, which has governed the territory since 2007.
The protest comes amidst a dire humanitarian crisis. The ongoing conflict, which began with Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, has left over 792 Palestinians dead, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Israel’s subsequent military operation has resulted in an estimated 50,021 Palestinian casualties, also primarily civilians. The blockade of aid imposed by Israel since March 2nd has further exacerbated the already dire situation. The total death toll in Israel from the initial Hamas attack stands at 1,218.
