**PITTSBURG, Calif. (KTVU)** – A 22-year-old woman was killed and her fiancé critically injured after their SUV was struck by a suspect fleeing from California Highway Patrol officers early Sunday morning. Vilamalia Polina Tuipulotu died at the scene of the collision near East Leland Road and Gladstone Drive. Her fiancé, 23-year-old Beaux Tagaloa, a former Cal football player and Diablo Valley College coach, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The couple were returning home from a family gathering when their vehicle was hit by a stolen Infiniti driven by a suspect who had been pursued by CHP officers after allegedly exceeding 100 mph on Highway 4. The approximately one-minute pursuit ended with the collision.

Pittsburg Mayor Jelani Killings expressed condolences to the families, calling the incident “an unfortunate and difficult situation for our community to process.” Tuipulotu’s sister described her as a “radiant soul” with a “welcoming spirit.”

Legal analyst Michael Cardoza emphasized that while the investigation continues, the fleeing driver bears ultimate responsibility for the tragic outcome. He cautioned against solely focusing on the actions of law enforcement, stating that the driver of the stolen vehicle should be held accountable.

The incident follows another serious crash in Oakland involving a driver who fled from CHP officers, highlighting concerns about high-speed pursuits. The investigation into Sunday’s events is ongoing.
