Mon Mar 24 21:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Social Security Payments: Millions of Americans to Receive Benefits in April, but Changes Loom

**Glasgow, Scotland** – Millions of Americans will receive their Social Security benefits in April, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed. However, recipients should be aware of significant changes impacting payment schedules and retrieval of overpayments.

Retirement benefits, paid monthly to around 70 million Americans, are distributed based on birthdate. The maximum monthly retirement payment for those claiming benefits at full retirement age (currently 67) is $4,018, while those claiming at age 62 receive a maximum of $2,831. Delaying benefits until age 70 increases the maximum to $5,108. These figures represent the maximum; actual benefits vary based on individual earnings and contribution history. The average monthly retirement benefit in January 2025 was $1,976.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, for elderly, blind, and disabled individuals with limited income, are typically issued at the beginning of the month. The maximum monthly SSI payment for 2025 is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. Actual payments may be lower depending on income and other factors.

The SSA has announced two key policy shifts. Starting March 31st, identity verification will no longer be possible via phone, a move aimed at preventing benefit fraud. Furthermore, starting March 27th, the SSA will resume withholding 100% of Social Security payments to recoup overpayments, reversing a Biden administration policy that limited clawbacks to 10% of monthly income.

Finally, the Social Security Fairness Act will lead to increased monthly benefits for those previously affected by provisions that reduced payments, effective April 2025. Recipients are advised to check the SSA website for specific payment dates and further details regarding these changes.
