**Jammu, March 25, 2025** – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today defended the use of the term “Union Territory” in a recently passed bill, asserting that the region’s status remains unchanged until Parliament restores statehood. His comments followed a walkout by People’s Conference member Sajad Gani Lone, who protested the bill’s use of the term, viewing it as an endorsement of the current status.
Mr. Abdullah countered Lone’s protest, stating that mentioning “Union Territory” in the bill doesn’t alter the underlying reality. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to regain statehood, citing resolutions passed and discussions held with the Prime Minister. He further criticized the walkout as unproductive political maneuvering, urging his colleagues to focus on substantive action. Similar concerns were raised by Wahid Para of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The Chief Minister highlighted that all legislative business, including previous finance bills, had been conducted under the “Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir” designation. He also noted that all assembly members had taken their oaths and contested elections under the current Union Territory framework. Mr. Abdullah reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the restoration of statehood, stating that they continue to advocate for this change at every opportunity. The amended Jammu and Kashmir Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act, 2017, was passed amidst the controversy.
