**Mumbai, India** – Comedian Kunal Kamra is facing a barrage of death threats following his satirical performance targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Kamra, who claims to have received over 500 threatening calls solely from Shiv Sena workers, insists that the lack of threats from BJP members suggests even the BJP is unhappy with Shinde.
Kamra’s controversial act, a satirical rendition of the song “Bholi Si Surat,” alluded to Shinde’s alleged betrayal in 2022 when he orchestrated a split in the Shiv Sena, aligning with the BJP and toppling the Uddhav Thackeray government. The performance, which included the term “gaddar” (traitor), sparked outrage among Shiv Sena supporters.
Following the online posting of the performance, Shiv Sena workers vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai where the show took place. Twelve Sena members were arrested and later released on bail. Furthermore, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed a police complaint against Kamra.
While the Khar police summoned Kamra for questioning, he requested a week’s extension. The comedian maintains his stance, suggesting his criticisms are not unfounded given the reportedly strained relationship between the Shiv Sena and the BJP, and Shinde’s own alleged dissatisfaction with his current position. The situation highlights the volatile political climate in Maharashtra and the potential consequences of criticizing prominent figures.
