**Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica –** The 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, Miller Gardner, has died during a family vacation in Costa Rica. Preliminary reports from the Judicial Investigative Agency suggest the cause of death may be asphyxia following a possible food-borne illness.
Miller’s body was discovered Friday in a hotel room in the Manuel Antonio resort area. Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy and toxicology report to confirm the cause of death. In a statement released Sunday, Brett and his wife, Jessica, described Miller as a beloved son and brother who died peacefully in his sleep after falling ill along with other family members. They highlighted his passion for sports and the outdoors.
Miller Gardner, a bright and active teenager, leaves behind a grieving family and community. His father, Brett Gardner, played 14 seasons with the Yankees, contributing to their 2009 World Series victory.
