Tue Mar 25 11:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Social Security Payments on Schedule, Retroactive Payments Rolling Out

**Washington D.C. –** The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed that its 2025 payment schedule remains largely unchanged. Beneficiaries expecting payments on the 26th of the month can anticipate receiving them as usual. Those who applied for benefits before May 1997 will receive payments on the 3rd (or the preceding business day).

Average monthly payments for retirees as of January 2025 are estimated at $2,000 (approximately $1,978 after taxes), while those who retired earlier receive an average of $1,580. Surviving family members receive an average of $1,546 monthly. March Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments were issued early, on February 28th, due to March 1st falling on a weekend – marking the fourth consecutive month of early SSI disbursement.

A significant development is the ongoing distribution of retroactive Social Security benefit increases, impacting over 3.2 million beneficiaries, including former public service workers. The SSA is rapidly implementing the Social Security Fairness Act, which repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset. As of March 4th, over $7.5 billion in back payments, averaging $6,710 per recipient, has been distributed to 1,127,723 individuals. Most eligible recipients should receive their one-time retroactive payment by the end of March, with increased monthly payments starting in April. The legislation will benefit numerous workers, including teachers, first responders, and those previously under foreign social security arrangements.
