**Norman, OK** – The No. 3 seed Oklahoma Sooners set a new NCAA women’s basketball tournament record with 72 rebounds in their dominant 81-58 victory over No. 14 Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Saturday. The performance showcased the Sooners’ exceptional rebounding prowess, a strength they displayed throughout the season, leading all Power 4 conference teams.
The Sooners’ offensive rebounding was particularly impressive, with 23 boards giving them numerous second-chance opportunities. While acknowledging the high number of missed shots (31 of 80 from the field, 38.7%), coach Jennie Baranczyk attributed the success to the game’s fast pace and her team’s relentless effort on the boards.
Junior center Raegan Beers led the charge with a season-high 18 rebounds, just shy of the Oklahoma NCAA tournament record of 20 set by Courtney Paris in 2007. Senior forward Skylar Vann contributed nine rebounds and a game-high 24 points, complementing Beers’ 25-point performance. Vann’s impressive showing came in what she considered might be her final game for the Sooners.
Oklahoma’s overall rebounding average of 47.3 per game this season ranks second nationally behind only Troy. The team’s performance propels them into the second round where they will face No. 11 seed Iowa.
