**Uppsala, Sweden** – A new study from Uppsala University and Chalmers University of Technology reveals a surprising link between office coffee machines and elevated cholesterol levels. Research published in *Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases* found that coffee brewed in common workplace coffee machines contains significantly higher levels of cholesterol-raising compounds, specifically cafestol and kahweol, than coffee made with paper filter methods.

Researchers analyzed coffee from fourteen different office coffee machines across various workplaces, using five common ground coffee brands. They discovered substantial variation in cafestol and kahweol levels both between machines and over time. Many samples contained enough of these compounds to potentially impact LDL cholesterol levels and increase cardiovascular disease risk, particularly for heavy coffee drinkers.

Lead researcher David Iggman explained that while the detrimental effects of cafestol and kahweol in boiled coffee are known, this study highlights the inconsistent filtering capabilities of common office machines. Unlike paper filter coffee makers, which effectively remove these compounds, many office machines leave them present in the brewed coffee.

Iggman noted that a controlled study is needed to precisely quantify the impact on LDL cholesterol. However, the findings strongly suggest that individuals who consume large amounts of office-brewed coffee should consider switching to coffee made with a paper filter to minimize their intake of these cholesterol-elevating substances. The researchers emphasize the importance of filtration in reducing the risk.
