**Prayagraj, India** – Lawyers at the Allahabad High Court have begun an indefinite strike to protest the Supreme Court’s decision to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma, a Delhi High Court judge, back to their court. The decision follows the discovery of burnt cash at Justice Varma’s Delhi bungalow on Holi.

Justice Varma, who served at the Allahabad High Court from 2014 to 2021, was recently removed from active duty in Delhi. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association, led by President Anil Tiwari, vehemently opposes his return, stating that “no court is a dumping ground” and urging the Chief Justice of India not to finalize the transfer. They argue that Justice Varma should remain in Delhi under Supreme Court supervision until investigations are complete.

The Bar Association also demands a review of all judgments issued by Justice Varma to restore public confidence and calls for a CBI and Enforcement Directorate inquiry into the cash discovery. This marks the second time the association has publicly opposed the transfer, previously declaring the Allahabad High Court “not a trash bin.”

While the Supreme Court has stated the transfer and the cash discovery are unrelated, and has formed a panel to conduct an internal inquiry, the lawyers remain unconvinced. Justice Varma has denied any connection to the money, attributing the incident to the unlocked outhouse on his property. The Supreme Court has also released a report by the Delhi High Court Chief Justice, an unprecedented move cited as a commitment to transparency. The transfer is pending government approval.
