Tue Mar 25 15:58:08 UTC 2025: ## Kochi Water Metro Expansion Halted Due to Ferry Limitations

**KOCHI, March 25, 2025** – The Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, announced today that plans to extend the Kochi Water Metro ferry service to Perumbalam and Kakathuruth islands have been scrapped. The decision stems from the limited operational range of the electric-hybrid ferries, which cannot complete the journey from the Vyttila Mobility Hub to the islands within their one-hour operational limit.

Vijayan made the announcement in the state Assembly in response to a query from Aroor MLA Daleema Jojo. The Water Metro project, launched in April 2023 after initial conception in 2016, aims to connect mainland Kochi to ten islands via a network of 38 terminals spanning from Edakochi-Varapuzha to Kakkanad and Vypeen. Despite the setback regarding the expansion, the Chief Minister lauded the project as a sustainable and eco-friendly model for the rest of India.
