**Kolhapur, March 26, 2025** – Nagpur journalist Prashant Koratkar was remanded to three days of police custody on Tuesday after being arrested for allegedly threatening historian Indrajit Sawant and making derogatory remarks against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Kolhapur Sessions Court granted the custody until March 28, allowing police to conduct a voice test to verify an alleged audio conversation between Koratkar and Sawant.
Koratkar, detained Monday in Telangana, was brought to Kolhapur and formally arrested. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for promoting enmity between groups. The complaint originated from the Juna Rajwada Police Station in Kolhapur.
Sawant’s lawyer, Asim Sarode, argued for a seven-day custody, citing objectionable statements about Rajmata Jijau and claiming Koratkar had “instigated emotions of people.” Police also requested seven days to collect voice samples, investigate potential evidence tampering, and trace individuals who may have assisted Koratkar. Mr. Sarode stated that the police needed time to investigate Koratkar’s movements and the assistance he received, as the accused denied making the phone call.
Koratkar’s lawyer countered that his client was not served a notice prior to arrest and alleged the arrest was a result of media pressure. He questioned why voice samples were not collected earlier when Koratkar had received interim protection from arrest. The case hinges on the alleged audio conversation, with the voice test expected to play a crucial role in the investigation.
