Tue Mar 25 10:58:47 UTC 2025: ## India Urged to Lead AI Revolution, Not Just Consume It

**New Delhi** – Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha issued a stark warning in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday, urging India to accelerate its development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or risk falling significantly behind global leaders like the US and China. Chadha highlighted the substantial advancements made by these nations, citing specific AI models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, while emphasizing India’s comparatively lagging position despite possessing a large and skilled workforce.

Chadha pointed to concerning statistics: while the US holds 60% and China 20% of global AI patents (2010-2022), India secured only half of China’s share. He acknowledged India’s strengths, including ranking third globally in AI skill penetration and boasting a vast pool of AI professionals (approximately 4.5 lakh working abroad), but criticized the country’s current role as primarily an AI consumer.

Quoting OpenAI founder Sam Altman’s reportedly pessimistic assessment of India’s AI potential, Chadha stressed the urgent need for a shift towards becoming an AI producer. He proposed a multi-pronged strategy including:

* **Developing indigenous AI chips.**
* **Establishing a dedicated AI infrastructure fund.**
* **Offering research grants and tax breaks to incentivize AI development.**
* **Implementing measures to prevent the emigration of top AI talent.**
* **Providing Indian startups with greater access to data currently controlled by large international corporations.**
* **Significantly increasing government investment in AI research (currently at 0.7% of GDP, compared to 3.5% in the US and 2.5% in China).**

Chadha concluded by advocating for a “Make AI in India” initiative, parallel to the existing “Make in India” program, arguing that AI dominance will be crucial for future global leadership.
