Tue Mar 25 16:43:55 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Launches Adult BCG Vaccination Program to Combat Tuberculosis
**Bengaluru, March 25, 2025** – Karnataka launched a state-wide adult BCG vaccination initiative on Tuesday, coinciding with World TB Day, in a bid to bolster tuberculosis (TB) prevention efforts. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao launched the program at Sir CV Raman Public Hospital in Indiranagar, Bengaluru.
Historically used for infant vaccination, recent studies suggest that adult BCG vaccination, particularly for high-risk groups, offers increased protection against TB. The campaign will prioritize individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, those with a BMI below 18.5, diabetics, smokers, individuals with a history of TB treatment, household contacts of TB patients, and those with compromised immunity.
The phased rollout will cover 16 districts. Minister Rao emphasized the vaccine’s safety and free availability, urging citizens to participate and spread awareness. He also highlighted the availability of free TB diagnosis and treatment statewide.
To enhance diagnostic capabilities, Karnataka will install 159 new Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) machines across district and taluk hospitals, community health centers, and primary health centers this year. This initiative aims to strengthen decentralized TB detection services across the state.
