**Prayagraj, March 25, 2025** – Lawyers at the Allahabad High Court launched an indefinite strike today to protest the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma back to Allahabad. The protest, led by Bar Association president Anil Tiwari, is not directed at Justice Varma himself, but rather against the perceived lack of transparency and alleged corruption within the judicial system.
The Supreme Court collegium confirmed its decision to recommend Justice Varma’s transfer on Monday. This follows an incident on March 14th where a fire at his Delhi residence led to the alleged discovery of a large sum of cash. Justice Varma vehemently denies any knowledge of the cash and alleges a conspiracy to discredit him.
Mr. Tiwari stated that the strike will continue until the transfer order is withdrawn, emphasizing the lawyers’ commitment to fighting for transparency and accountability within the judiciary. He described the situation as a cover-up and expressed solidarity with lawyers across India who are joining the protest.
Justice Varma, who was enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and served as a judge in Allahabad before transferring to Delhi in 2021, has had his judicial work withdrawn pending an investigation into the cash discovery. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association had previously voiced its opposition to the transfer and decided on the strike on Monday.
