Tue Mar 25 09:10:53 UTC 2025: ## Rajya Sabha to Discuss Cash Found at Delhi High Court Judge’s Residence

**New Delhi, March 25, 2025** – The Rajya Sabha convened a meeting of floor leaders Tuesday afternoon to determine the chamber’s response to the discovery of a large sum of cash at the residence of a Delhi High Court judge. The decision follows a rejected motion by IUML MP Haris Beeran to prioritize a discussion on the matter.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who initiated the meeting at the suggestion of Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the House J.P. Nadda, described the situation as “serious.” He highlighted the unprecedented action of the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, in publicly releasing an internal inquiry report, including photos and video evidence, concerning the incident. The report details the discovery of semi-burnt sacks of cash following a fire at the judge’s residence on March 14th. Justice Khanna has also appointed a three-member panel to further investigate the matter.

Dhankhar’s remarks touched on the implications for the relationship between the legislature and judiciary, referencing the Supreme Court’s striking down of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act, a law passed almost unanimously by Parliament. He argued that a different system of judicial appointments might have avoided the current controversy. He emphasized that while the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” applies, the incident represents a “judicial mess” requiring serious consideration. The Chairman stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of Parliament and expressed concern over the implications for the legislature’s relevance.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari echoed the need for transparency and accountability. The meeting of floor leaders aims to formulate a collective response to this high-profile incident.
