**PITTSBURG, CA** – A former University of California, Berkeley football player, Beaux Tagaloa, is hospitalized in critical condition following a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of his fiancée, 23-year-old Villamalia Polina Tu’ipulotu. The couple was struck by a speeding stolen vehicle early Sunday morning.
The incident began with a high-speed pursuit of a stolen gray Infiniti sedan traveling over 100 mph on Highway 4 by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle, driven by an armed individual, crashed into Tu’ipulotu and Tagaloa’s SUV near East Leland Road and Gladstone Drive in Pittsburg around 12:41 a.m.
Tu’ipulotu was pronounced dead at the scene. Tagaloa, a former Cal football player, sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized. The suspect, who also suffered injuries, is in custody.
Tu’ipulotu’s family described her as a loving and beautiful person who was to be married this summer. A GoFundMe campaign has already raised over $38,000 to assist with funeral expenses.
Cal Athletics released a statement offering support to Tagaloa and his family during this difficult time. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation into the accident, with assistance from the CHP and Pittsburg Police Department.
