**Mumbai, March 25, 2025** – Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has criticized comedian Kunal Kamra for his satirical remarks targeting the Deputy CM’s political career, likening the comments to a “supari” (contract killing) and asserting that satire should have limits.
Kamra’s performance, a parody of a popular Hindi song and jokes about recent political events in Maharashtra, sparked controversy. Following the show, Shiv Sena members vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai where Kamra performed.
While acknowledging freedom of speech, Shinde stated, “There should be a limit. This is like taking ‘supari’ to speak against someone. Action causes reaction.” He added that he does not condone the vandalism but implied that Kamra’s actions provoked it. Shinde further criticized Kamra for past comments directed at the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister, journalist Arnab Goswami, and several industrialists. He argued that this was not freedom of speech but rather working for someone else.
Kamra has refused to apologize for his comments and has condemned the vandalism.
Shinde emphasized his focus on development and welfare schemes as a response to the controversy, highlighting initiatives like the ‘Ladki Bahin’ and ‘Lakhpati Didi’ schemes, and the provision of free education for girls. He stated, “I don’t focus on who says what; I answer them through my work.”
