**OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – March 24, 2025** – A nationwide text message scam targeting E-ZPass users is raising concerns across the country. The scam, utilizing the technique known as “smishing,” involves fraudulent texts impersonating the E-ZPass Group, a consortium of toll collection agencies spanning 20 states. The messages contain malicious links designed to steal personal information and money.
While the E-ZPass Group itself is not directly involved, the scam’s wide reach leverages the widespread use of electronic toll collection systems nationwide. Oklahoma, although not using the E-ZPass system, is not immune to such scams. Oklahomans have previously been targeted by similar smishing attempts impersonating the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA).
The OTA and other authorities advise recipients of suspicious texts to be wary of incorrect names or URLs. They urge citizens to report such messages as spam and never click on unknown links or call unfamiliar numbers. If there’s doubt about a message’s authenticity, checking the official website for contact information is recommended.
Imposter scams were the second most prevalent type of fraud in the U.S. in 2023, resulting in nearly $3 billion in losses. Authorities stress the importance of caution when dealing with suspicious texts and encourage anyone who believes they’ve been targeted to file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
