**Villupuram, March 25, 2025** – The National Archives of India (NAI) has launched a major digitization project to make over 70 lakh pages of archival records from the Puducherry Record Centre accessible online. Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced the initiative in the Lok Sabha on Monday, stating that the project, which began on March 28, 2024, aims to complete digitization within two years.

The initiative, responding to a question from Villupuram MP D. Ravikumar, involves a comprehensive process encompassing preservation, conservation, and digitization to ensure easy public access via the Abhilekh Patal web portal. The Minister also highlighted ongoing modernization efforts at the Puducherry Record Centre, including upgrades to research rooms, conservation facilities, and digitization labs. Furthermore, the NAI is actively seeking to acquire additional private archival collections, palm leaf manuscripts, and historical documents through donations.
