**New Delhi, March 25, 2025** – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced today a plan to relocate the infamous Tihar Jail to the city’s outskirts. A budget allocation of ₹10 crore has been earmarked for initial survey and consultancy services to facilitate the move, as part of the 2025-26 budget.

The decision, according to the CM, addresses significant safety concerns arising from the jail’s current location in close proximity to residential areas. Established in 1958, Tihar is one of India’s largest prison complexes, encompassing nine central prisons spread across over 400 acres.
