**Mumbai, March 24, 2025** – Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is facing renewed controversy following comments targeting Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. The situation escalated after a purported phone call between Kamra and a Shiv Sena supporter went viral, revealing threats against the comedian.
In the 53-second audio clip, the caller, identifying himself as Jagadish Sharma, berated Kamra for his remarks against Shinde. He referenced the vandalism of the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, where Kamra’s show was recorded, and threatened similar action against the comedian, vowing to track him down even in Tamil Nadu, where Kamra currently resides. A second Shiv Sena supporter joined the call, further emphasizing the threat before the call ended abruptly. NDTV has not independently verified the authenticity of the recording.
The incident follows Sunday’s vandalism of the comedy club and a nearby hotel by Shiv Sena workers, protesting Kamra’s show which contained a “traitor” jibe at Shinde. Mumbai police have since registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Kamra for his comments. Kamra has reportedly told police he does not regret his statements and will only apologize if ordered by a court. He has also denied allegations of being paid by the opposition to target Shinde.
The audio recording, however, has sparked amusement on social media. Many users, including Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, highlighted the caller’s apparent difficulty in locating Kamra in Tamil Nadu, characterizing the entire interaction as comedic.
Kamra himself released a statement addressing the controversy, while also criticizing those who leaked his phone number, stating that all unknown calls are routed to a voicemail featuring a song disliked by his detractors. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between political figures and comedians in India.
