Tue Mar 25 14:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Capitals Lock Up Top Defenseman Chychrun with Eight-Year, $72 Million Deal

**Washington, D.C. –** The Washington Capitals have signed star defenseman Jakob Chychrun to a massive eight-year, $72 million contract extension, the team announced today. The deal carries a $9 million average annual value and secures the services of one of the NHL’s top blueliners through the 2032 season.

Chychrun, 26, has been a key contributor since joining the Capitals last year, leading the team’s defensemen in goals (18), game-winning goals (6), and power-play points (14) this season. His 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists) in 65 games represent a career high for a single season with the Capitals. He is also tied for second in the NHL among defensemen in power-play goals with 5. The Capitals boast a perfect 17-0-1 record in games where Chychrun scores.

“Jakob is a proven, dynamic defenseman in the prime of his career,” said Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick. “His work ethic, skill set, and ability to excel in all situations make him a valuable asset.”

Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Chychrun ranks among the NHL’s elite defensemen in goals and power-play production. Only Cale Makar and Roman Josi have surpassed his offensive numbers over that span.

Acquired from the Ottawa Senators last year in a trade for defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round draft pick, Chychrun’s 18 goals are the most by a Capitals defenseman in their first season with the team. He’s also one of only five Capitals defensemen to play in at least 65 games this season.

The long-term contract reflects the Capitals’ commitment to Chychrun and their belief in his ability to continue to be a cornerstone of their defensive core for years to come.
